Thiscapacitormustbelocatedadistanceofnotmorethan0.5\"fromtheinputpinoftheLP2981andreturnedtoacleananalogground.Anygoodqualityceramicortantalumcanbeusedforthiscapacitor.

OUTPUTCAPACITOR:TheoutputcapacitormustmeetboththerequirementforminimumamountofcapacitanceandE.S.R.(equivalentseriesresistance)value.CurvesareprovidedwhichshowtheallowableESRrangeasafunctionofloadcurrentforvariousoutputvoltagesandcapacitorval-ues(refertoFigures1,2,3,4).

CAPACITORCHARACTERISTICS

TANTALUM:TantalumcapacitorsarethebestchoiceforusewiththeLP2981.MostgoodqualitytantalumscanbeusedwiththeLP2981,butcheckthemanufacturer’sdatasheettobesuretheESRisinrange.

ItisimportanttorememberthatESRincreasesatlowertem-peraturesandacapacitorthatisneartheupperlimitforsta-bilityatroomtemperaturecancauseinstabilitywhenitgetscold.

Inapplicationswhichmustoperateatverylowtemperatures,itmaybenecessarytoparalleltheoutputtantalumcapacitorwithaceramiccapacitortopreventtheESRfromgoinguptoohigh(seenextsectionforimportantinformationonce-ramiccapacitors).

CERAMIC:CeramiccapacitorsarenotrecommendedforuseattheoutputoftheLP2981.ThisisbecausetheESRofaceramiccanbelowenoughtogobelowtheminimumstablevaluefortheLP2981.A2.2µFceramicwasmeasuredandfoundtohaveanESRofabout15mΩ,whichislowenoughtocauseoscillations.

Ifaceramiccapacitorisusedontheoutput,a1Ωresistorshouldbeplacedinserieswiththecapacitor.

ALUMINUM:Becauseoflargephysicalsize,aluminumelec-trolyticsarenottypicallyusedwiththeLP2981.TheymustmeetthesameESRrequirementsovertheoperatingtem-peraturerange,moredifficultbecauseoftheirsteepincreaseatcoldtemperature.

AnaluminumelectrolyticcanexhibitanESRincreaseofasmuchas50Xwhengoingfrom20˚Cto−40˚C.Also,somealuminumelectrolyticsarenotoperationalbelow−25˚Cbe-causetheelectrolytecanfreeze.

TheLP2981isshutoffbypullingtheON/OFFinputlow,andturnedonbydrivingtheinputhigh.Ifthisfeatureisnottobeused,theON/OFFinputshouldbetiedtoVINtokeeptheregulatoronatalltimes(theON/OFFinputmustnotbeleftfloating).

Toensureproperoperation,thesignalsourceusedtodrivetheON/OFFinputmustbeabletoswingaboveandbelowthespecifiedturn-on/turn-offvoltagethresholdswhichguar-anteeanONorOFFstate(seeElectricalCharacteristics).TheON/OFFsignalmaycomefromeitheratotem-poleout-put,oranopen-collectoroutputwithpull-upresistortotheLP2981inputvoltageoranotherlogicsupply.Thehigh-levelvoltagemayexceedtheLP2981inputvoltage,butmustre-mainwithintheAbsoluteMaximumRatingsfortheON/OFFpin.

Itisalsoimportantthattheturn-on/turn-offvoltagesignalsappliedtotheON/OFFinputhaveaslewratewhichisgreaterthan40mV/µs.
