1. The introduction to Daniel Defoe

Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) English novelist, pamphleteer, and journalist, is most famous as the author of Robinson Crusoe (1719), a story of a man shipwrecked alone on an island. Along with Samuel Richardson, Defoe is considered the founder of the English novel.

Defoe was born as the son of James Foe, a butcher of Stroke Newington. He studied at Charles Morton's Academy, London. Although his Nonconformist father intended him for the ministry,Defoe was born as the son of James Foe, a butcher of Stroke Newington. He studied at Charles Morton's Academy, London. In the early 1680s Defoe was a commission merchant in Cornhill but went bankrupt in 1691.

In 1719, when he was almost sixty years old, he retired to the countryside and wrote his first, also the most famous novel Robinson Crusoe. It was a great success to him and later followed a number of other novels, including Captain Singleton, Moll Flanders and Roxana. He died in 1730 and was buried at Bunhill Field in London. Daniel Defoe's life was full of unexpected changes. From poverty to wealth, from a prisoner to a very famous writer, he experiences were a great treasure for his later writings. 2. Analysis of Robinson Crusoe's character in the novel

Character are often described as being flat or round, static or dynamic. A flat character is not fully developed. People see only one aspect of their personalities because presumably, the author does not need to reveal more about them for the purpose of the story. It plays a supporting role to the main character. To describe the character and characterization in this story, it willed be simplified it to be one question: what are the characteristics of Robinson as the main character in the novel? Now i will explain the character of Robinson below:

He want to feel a new experience so he try to leave his home though his father did not permit him. Actually as a young man, he bored with his boring life and he want to go sailing.

\"...and i should certainly run away from my master before my time was out, and go to sea...\"(Defoe.1995.P3.Wordsworth Editions Ltd)

Robinson was also make his rebellion when he was a slave. He wanted to escape from there.

\"Here i meditated nothing but my escape, and what method i might take to effect it,...\"(Defoe.1995.P13.Wordsworth Editions Ltd)

Finally, he escaped with a young boy who being his friend and his servant too. When he has cast away in the island. He began to find his God. It is interesting because Robinson learn his religion by himself, without others help.through his reflection of his life, he realized himself as a sinner and that reflection made him thought that there's nothing who can help somebody except God.

He also thinks that for learned a religion deeper, we haven't to get help from other people, but just by ourselves.

\"...yet nothing divine Revelation can from the knowledge of Jesus Christ...nothing but a Revelation from Heaven, can form in the Soul...\" (Defoe.1995.P158.Wordsworth Editions Ltd)

That thought is also powerful when he felt sad and he took the Bible and after he felt no more sad. It proved that if we pray or read the holy book, we will feel better. So, to be more calmly, we don't need other people actually.

\"When i had done praying, i took up my Bible, and opening it to read, the first words that presented to me were, wait on the Lord, and be of good cheer, and he shall strengthen thy heart; wait, i say, on the Lord. 95 it is impossible to express the comfort this gave me. In answer, i thankfully laid down the book, and was no more sad, at least, not on that occasion. (Defoe.1995.P121. Wordsworth Editions Ltd)

All of those quotations show that Robinson finally find his own peaceful. Sometimes we need to reflect our life and think more to reach the closeness to God.

As a good Christian, Robinson shows his kind hearted especially for the following:

\"My man Friday was a Protestant, his father was a Pagan and a Cannibal, and the Spaniard was a Papist: However, i allowed Liberty of Conscience throughout my Dominions...\"(Defoe.1995.P174.Wordsworth Editions Ltd.)

Robinson find difficulties when he cast away in the island. He try to make something useful to alive. To fulfill his foods needs, he try to catch some animals.

\"...I found in one of them a large old he goat, and in one of the other three kids,a male and two female\"(Defoe.1995.P111.Wordsworth Editions Ltd.) Then he started to domesticated the goats because he thinks it would be easier for him if the goods are tame.

\"I find the three kids in the best part of it, and used them to feed as near as possible, to make them familiar; and very often i would go and carry them some ears of barely, or a handful of rice, and feed them out of my hands; so that after my enclosure was finished, and i let them loose, they would follow me up and down, bleating after me for a handful of corn\" (Defoe.1995.P113. Wordsworth Editions Ltd.)

From the goats, also, he made some tools to protect him from the weather like cap and jacket and belt to keep his gun.

\"I had a great high shapeless cap, made of a goat's skin...\" (Defoe.1995.P114. Wordsworth Editions Ltd.)

\"I had a short jacket of goat's skin...\" (Defoe.1995.P114. Wordsworth Editions Ltd)

\"I had on a board belt of goat's skin dried...\" (Defoe.1995.P114. Wordsworth Editions Ltd.)

From the describing of Robinson Crusoe's character in the novel written by

Daniel Defoe, it can be concluded that Robinson Crusoe's character are rebel, religious, tolerate, creative, imperialist and a diligent man. From that characterization we can know more about the individuality of Robinson. We also can understand about Robinson's detail of life.
