At first, I thought it was just useless e-mails. It was the end of the weekend and I hadn’t checked my e-mails since late Friday afternoon. There was a long list of messages. Some I removed without reading. Others were from friends-I saved those to read later when I had more time. One stood out from the rest for two reasons. The first was the name, Maher Nawaf, which I didn’t recognize. The second was the subject line: “pleas papers. “ Clearly, the e-mail was仕om someone who did not have a complete mastery of the English language. The message was from an Iraqi, a university research scientist in Mosul who wanted permission to reprint a research paper I had written. It was his hope that he could use my findings to help find a treatment for gastrointestinal (消化系统的) illness. He signed off:” warmest regards to you and lovely family. “ Despite his difficulty with the language, he had painted a picture for me由at was far more than a simple request for information. Ian Johnstone missed his girlfriend so much that he flew back to Britain from Australia to ask her to marry him. The problem is she did the same in the opposite direction. He and Amy Dolby even managed to miss each other when they sat in the same airport waiting room in Singapore at the same time to wait for connecting flights. After an 11,000-mile flight across the globe, Dolby was greeted by Johnstone’s astonished flatmate asking what she was doing there. “It was as though someone was playing a cruel joke on us,” she told The Times. “He is the most romantic(浪漫的)person I have ever known. I think our problem is that we are both quite impulsive(易冲动的)people. We are always trying to surprise each other. “ Johnstone, a 27-year-old construction worker, had taken a year off to travel round Australia. But he was missing Dolby, a 26-year-old secretary, so much that he got a job on a Sydney building site and started saving for a surprise. He then flew home to Britain and went to her apartment armed with an engagement(订婚) ring and flowers. “I really missed Amy and I’d been thinking about her all the time. I

thought she was winding me up when she phoned me from Australia. “ he said. Johnstone then asked Dolby to marry him on the phone. “I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, but I accepted. “ she said.

My interest in Chinese food started years ago, when I was a young reporter for the Washington Post. Our office wasn’t far from Chinatown, where I found some very good Chinese restaurants. The first time I ever ate Chinese food I loved it. I noticed the fresh taste of the meat and vegetables. When I learned more about the food, 1 began to understand why it has this special feature. Many years ago, China had an energy crisis (危机) because it lost much of its wood due to overpopulation and poor management of its forests. This loss was very bad for the country, of course, but it turned out to be very good for the food. Wood became very expensive and hard to get, so the Chinese had to either find a substitute (替代物) for their valuable wood, or learn how to use it better. There weren’t any substitutes so people found ways to economize. In order to economize in cooking, they had to use very little wood. So they started cutting their meat and vegetables into small pieces before they put them in the hot oil. That way, the food cooked faster and they saved their fuel. The food prepared in this way kept its fresh flavor(味道)—and it’s this flavor that attracts people from other countries to the art of Chinese cooking.

72. This text is mainly about______. A.what caused Chinese food to taste fresh B.how Chinese food is cooked in the US

C.when the author started to make Chinese food D.why most foreigners like cooking Chinese food

73. According to the text, what makes Chinese food attractive to foreigners? A.Its way of cooking. B.Its long history. C.Its special taste. D.Its lovely look.

根据第四段最后一句“The food prepared in this way kept its fresh flavor—and it’s this flavor that attracts people from other countries to the art of Chinese cooking”可知,通过这种方法准备的食物保留了新鲜的味道——正是这种味道吸引了其他国家的人来了解中餐的烹饪艺术。

74. The author mentioned the energy crisis to show______. A.it is important to protect the forests

B.it is necessary to find substitutes for wood C.why the Chinese changed their way of cooking

D.what problems a big population is causing China today

75. It can be inferred from the text that before the energy crisis Chinese food______.

A.was cooked in rather large pieces B.was cooked in water but not oil C.didn’t taste good D.didn’t look fresh

根据最后一段第二句“So they started cutting their meat and vegetables into small

pieces before they put them in the hot oil.”
