第一段“That will benefit the capital as well as its residents (居民), so the below are something to be expected from the Winter Olympic Games.”(这将使首都和它的居民受益,所以下面是对冬季奥运会的一些期待)是全文的主题句,结合下文从五个方面介绍了2022冬奥会所期待给人们生活带来的改变,可知这篇文章主要讲了人们对2022年冬奥会有什么期待。“对2022年冬奥会有什么期待”最适合作文章标题。故选D。 2.
词句猜测题。根据划线词前的句子“With a rich legacy left by the summer Olympics, China plans to reuse 11 of 12 venues built for the 2008 Olympics and only needs to build a new rink for speed skating”(由于夏季奥运会留下了丰富的遗产,中国计划重新利用为2008年奥运会建造的12个场馆中的11个,只需要建造一个新的速滑溜冰场)可知举办夏季奥运会所遗留的设施将得到充分的利用,可推知划线词所在句子意思是“有效缓解奥运会后设施闲置可能出现的问题”,“idle”意思是“没有被使用”。故选B。 3.
推理判断题,根据Transformation部分“On the back of the Winter Olympics, the Beijing municipal government is looking at fostering sports-related industry as a new growth driver to power its economy.”(在冬奥会的背景下,北京市政府正着眼于培育体育相关产业,将其作为推动经济增长的新驱动力)可推知“到2025年,将会出现大约60万个新就业机会”可以成为“转型”的一个例子。故选C。

This year some twenty-three hundred teenagers (young people aged from 13-19) from all over the world will spend about ten months in US homes. They will attend US schools, meet US teenagers, and form impressions of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and gain a new
understanding of the rest of the world.
Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George’s family. In turn, George’s son Mike spent a year in Fred’s home in America. Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months’ study the language began to come to him. School was completely different from what he had expected—much harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that were usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.
Family life, too, was different. The father’s word was law, and all activities were around the family rather than the individual. Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car. “Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out and have a good time. In Germany, you walk, but you soon learn to like it. ”
At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his idea. “I suppose I should criticize American schools,” he said. “It is far too easy by our level. But I have to say that I like it very much. In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities. I think that maybe your schools are better in training for citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two.”
1.The whole exchange program is mainly to ________. A.help teenagers in other countries know the real America B.send students in America to travel in Germany C.let students learn something about other countries D.have teenagers learn new languages 2.What is particular in American schools?
A.There is some middle ground between the two teaching buildings. B.There are a lot of outside activities. C.Students usually take 14 subjects in all. D.Students go outside to enjoy themselves in a car.
3.What did Mike think after experiencing the American school life?
A.A better education should include something good from both America and Germany. B.German schools trained students to be better citizens. C.American schools were not as good as German schools. D.The easy life in the American school was more helpful to students. 4.What’s Mike’s attitude towards American education? A.Praise. C.Ignore.
B.Regret. D.Accuse (指责).
【答案】 1.C 2.B 3.A
根据第一段关键句“They will attend US schools, meet US teenagers, and form impressions of the real America.(他们将进入美国学校,遇见美国青少年,并形成对真实的美国的印象。)”和“At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world.(与此同时,大约1300名美国青少年将前往其他国家学习新的语言,并对世界其他地区有新的了解。)”
根据最后一段关键句“In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities.(在德国,我们除了学习什么也不做。在这里,我们参加了许多户外活动。)”可知,在美国,学生可以参加许多户外活动,句中的“Here”代指的是“美国的学校”,由此可知,美国学校的特别之处在于有很多户外活动。故选B项。 3.
推理判断题。根据最后一段关键句““I suppose I should criticize American schools,” he said. “It is far too easy by our level.(“我想我应该批评美国学校,”他说。“以我们的水平来说,这太容易了。”)”和“I think that maybe your schools are better in training for citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two.(我认为也许你们的学校在培训公民方面更好。这两者之间应该有某种中间立场。)”可知,在Mike看来,美国学校的课程设置应该更难一些,这是美国学校应该向德国学校学习的地方,但美国学校的学生能够参加更多的户外活动,这是德国学校应该向美国学校学习的地方,由此可知,Mike在经历了美国的学校生活后认为,更好的教育应该包括来自美国和德国的好的方面,包括双方的优点。故选A项。 4.
根据最后一段关键句““I suppose I should criticize American schools,” he said. “It is far too easy by our level.(“我想我应该批评美国学校,”他说。“以我们的水平来说,这太容易了。”)”可知,Mike对美国学校的教育持批评的态度,他认为美国学校的课程设置应该更难一些,由此可推断出,Mike对美国教育持指责态度。故选D项。

Very old people do raise moral problems for almost everyone who comes in contact with them. Their values — this can’t be repeated too often — are not necessarily our values. Physical comfort, cleanness and order are not necessarily the most important things. The social services from time to time find themselves faced with a flat with decaying food covered by small worms, and an old person lying alone in bed, taking no notice of the worms. But is it interfering (干涉) with personal freedom to insist that they go to live with some of their relatives so that they might be taken better care of. Some social workers, the ones who clear up the worms, think we are in danger of carrying this concept of personal freedom to the point where serious risks are being taken with the health and safety of the old.
Indeed, the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The body is like a car, it needs more mechanical maintenance (机械维修,保养) as it gets older. You can carry this comparison right through to the provision of spare parts. But never forget that such operations are painful experiences, however good the results will be. And at what point should you stop to treat the old body? Is it morally right to try to push off death by seeking the development of drugs to excite the forgetful old mind and to activate the old body, knowing that it is designed to die? You can't ask doctors or scientists to decide, because so long as they can see the technical opportunities, they will feel bound to give them a try, on the principle that while there’s life, there’s hope.
When you talk to the old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age is happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun. 1.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.The values are different between the old and the young. B.The moral problems raised by old people. C.The personal freedom for the old. D.Old people’s viewpoint on life.
2.We can know from the first paragraph that ________.
A.very old people would like to live alone to have more personal freedom B.very old people are able to keep their room clean C.very old people like to live with their children D.social services have nothing to do with very old people 3.According to the author, which of the following is right? A.The older a person, the more care he needs.
B.Too much emphasis has been put on old people’s values. C.The human body can’t be compared to a car. D.It is easy to provide spare parts for old people.
4.The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to “________”. A.their money or their health B.the conclusion you come to C.your talk to the old people D.whether age is happy or unpleasant

The body is like a car, it needs more mechanical maintenance as it gets older.(身体就像一辆汽车,随着年龄的增长,它需要更多的机械保养。) 故选A。
When you talk to the old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age is happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun.(然而,当你与老年人交谈时,你不得不得出这样的结论:老去是快乐还是不快乐,与其说取决于金钱或健康,不如说是取决于你的娱乐能力。) 故it指代上文whether age is happy or unpleasant。故选D。

I traveled to London, England in the spring of 2016. Actually, I traveled with CAPA International Education on a study program. At that time, I did a full three-month program but I traveled on weekends and during breaks.
I used to live in a small town outside New York. The idea of big cities has always excited me and I wanted to take advantage of that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It was a great opportunity for me to see how independent I could be in another country, because I hope to travel a lot more in the future.
I lived in a flat in Ealing Broadway with several other students from different American schools. The biggest surprise I found there was the culture shock I experienced. I had expected traveling to London to be an easy transition (转变) for me because I thought their culture was close to that of America. But you know the language and the people were greatly different from what I had expected. They had different accents. In fact, they were noisy and more free-thinking than most Americans I knew.
However, I tried to take part in their giant Chinese New Year celebration in Trafalgar Square. I went to several Jewish society holiday celebrations and actively participated in any cultural activities I knew at that time. It was great to be able to truly put myself in their culture. These are experiences I couldn't get anywhere else.
I would suggest people hoping to follow in my footsteps not let anything hold them back from exploring the foreign cultures presented to them. Yes, you are there for school, but your number one priority (优先) is yourself. So make sure you go home with no regrets. Do not miss anything! 1.What was the author's main purpose in going to London? A.To go sightseeing. B.To visit some relatives. C.To join in a study program. D.To experience the life in a big city.
2.What did the author think of the opportunity of traveling to London? A.It would change his life. B.It would test his independence. C.It would make his dream come true.
D.It would help improve his communication ability.
3.What was beyond the author's expectation after arriving in London? A.Culture differences. C.His living conditions.
A.explore more interesting places for traveling B.try to receive more international education C.combine study with exploring foreign cultures D.look for more ways to deal with the culture shock
B.Unfriendly students. D.Some strange accents.

My two daughters and I got into the car to spend our weekend in Florida. Autumn, the elder one, offered to drive. I sat next to her, and Amber sat in back. After setting off, the three of us sang to the radio at the top of our voice.
It was a great trip until the rain poured and the rain was too heavy. “I have to pull over, ” Autumn said. She tried to enter the far right lane (车道) to find a place to stop, but trucks ran fast, making water onto our car. The car was out of control, then worse — it started to move left and right. Autumn fought to control it but it was too late. We ran into a truck. The girls jumped out of the car. My chest felt much pain.
“Get out, Mom. Come on!” Amber cried. “I can't,” I said. Autumn took out her cellphone, “There's been an accident. Send an ambulance (救护车)!” Amber and Autumn pulled me out of the car and helped me lie on my back in the grassy area by the roadside. I had to calm myself and looked up. A man held a large umbrella over me and other kind faces appeared above me. A woman helped to treat a cut over Amber's eye. Another woman came close to me and said, “No one in the truck was injured. Help was on the way.” The woman mentioned she was a nurse; the other woman who took care of Amber's cut was an eye specialist. We couldn't have asked for better care.
In the hospital the pain in my chest began to disappear. Later, the tests at the hospital made sure we had no serious injuries. We'd left all our troubles behind thanks to these kind people, who seemed to be angels (天使) in my eyes.

The biggest soccer organization in the U.S. introduces new rules to make the sport safer. The U.S. Soccer Federation announced that players in its teams who are 10 or younger are no longer allowed to head the ball. Players aged from 11 to 13 have limits on how often they can practice heading.
The new rules are set to stop kids from getting hurt because of a blow to the head that shakes the brain. Players may get headaches by heading the ball. Even worse, they may also get concussions, which will cause lasting brain damage.
Heading the ball can be one of the most dangerous parts of soccer. Sometimes the force of hitting the ball with their heads gives players concussions. But more often, players receive concussions when they jump to head the ball and by accident knock heads with other players or fall and hit their heads on the grass.
“More concussions happen during the act of heading than any other action in soccer,” says Dr. Robert Cantu, an expert on brain damage.
So far, the new rules are only used by teams that are part of the U.S. Soccer Federation. But the group says it hopes more soccer teams will soon follow its example.

Language as a System of Symbols(符号)
Of all systems of symbols, language is the most highly developed. It has been pointed out that human beings, by agreement, can make anything stand for anything. Human beings have agreed, in the course of centuries of mutual dependency, to let the various noises that they can produce with their lungs, throats, tongues, teeth, and lips systematically stand for certain happenings in their nervous systems. We call that system of agreements language.
There is no necessary connection between the symbol and that which it stands for. Just as social positions can be symbolized by feathers worn on the head, by gold on the watch chain, or by a thousand other things according to the culture we live in, so the fact of being hungry can be symbolized by a thousand different noises according to the culture we live in.
However obvious these facts may appear at first glance, they are actually not so obvious as they seem except when we take special pains to think about the subject. Symbols and the things they stand for are independent of each other, yet we all have a way of feeling as if, and sometimes acting as if, there were necessary connections. For example, there are people who feel that foreign languages are unreasonable by nature; foreigners have such funny names for things, and why can’t they call things by their right names? This feeling exhibits itself most strongly in those English and American tourists who seem to believe that they can make the natives of any country understand English if they shout loud enough. Like the little boy who is reported to have said, “Pigs are called pigs because they are such dirty animals, ” they feel that the symbol is inherently connected in some way with the things symbolized.
1.Language is a highly developed system of symbols because human beings _______. A.have made use of language for centuries B.use our nervous systems to support language C.have made various noises stand for any events D.can make anything stand for anything by agreement 2.What can we conclude from Paragraph 2? A.Different noises may mean different things. B.Our culture determines what a symbol stands for. C.The language we use symbolizes our social positions.
D.Our social positions determine the way we are dressed.
3.In Paragraph 3 the underlined phrase “take special pains” probably means “_______”. A.try very hard C.are very unhappy
A.adults often learn from their young B.“pig” is a dirty word because pigs are dirty
C.words are not connected with the things they stand for D.people sometimes have wrong ideas about how language works
B.take our time D.feel especially painful
4.In Paragraph 3, the example of the little boy is used to show that _______.
【答案】 1.D 2.B 3.A 4.D 【分析】
根据第一段第二句“It has been pointed out that human beings, by agreement, can make anything stand for anything.(有人指出,人类通过约定俗成可以使任何事物代表任何事物)”由此可知,语言是一种高度发达的符号系统,因为人类可以通过约定俗成使任何事物代表任何事物。故选D。 2.
根据第二段中“Just as social positions can be symbolized by feathers worn on the head, by gold on the watch chain, or by a thousand other things according to the culture we live in, so the fact of being hungry can be symbolized by a thousand different noises according to the culture we live in. (就像社会地位可以用头上戴的羽毛、手表链上的金子,或者根据我们所处的文化,用千百种其他东西来象征一样,饥饿的事实也可以根据我们所处的文化,用千百种不同的声音来象征)”可推知,我们的文化决定了一个符号代表什么。故选B。 3.
词义猜测题。根据画线词上文“However obvious these facts may appear at first glance, they are actually not so obvious as they seem”可知无论这些事实第一眼看上去多么明显,它们实际上并不像它们看起来那样明显,除非我们花了特别的努力尝试去思考这个主题。
For example, there are people who feel that foreign languages are unreasonable by nature; foreigners have such funny names for things, and why can’t they call
things by their right names? This feeling exhibits itself most strongly in those English and American tourists who seem to believe that they can make the natives of any country understand English if they shout loud enough. Like the little boy who is reported to have said, “Pigs are called pigs because they are such dirty animals, ” they feel that the symbol is inherently connected in some way with the things symbolized.(比如说,有人觉得外语的本质是不合理的,外国人给事物起的名字很滑稽,为什么他们不能用正确的名字来称呼事物呢?

To develop one's taste in English, the most effective way is to read English books extensively. Yet one may be at a loss to choose the appropriate books, especially as a beginner. As a native Spanish, I would like to share some of my experience.
My first English novel was Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But my experience was somewhat disastrous. I had great difficulty in understanding the novel, let alone enjoying it. It's not the vocabulary that troubled me, but rather the way Austen constructs sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed too remote to me at that time. My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway's novel A Farewell to Arms. No long and complicated sentences. And I particularly liked his brief and straightforward (简洁的) style. So my first suggestion is, as a beginner, you'd better choose contemporary novels instead of classical ones. However, if you restrict yourself to novels you will miss a lot of treasures. English essays can at once inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell's work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the peculiar sense of humor. His simple language enables his philosophy within the reach of ordinary people. Here comes my second suggestion — essays are indispensable.
Never follow others' recommendations and opinions blindly, however famous or influential (有很大影响的) the person might be. We should be open to various ideas, but always think and determine for ourselves. As a saying goes, one man's meat is another man's poison. With that in mind, we are bound to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.
1.What made the first English novel that the author read hard to understand? A.Complicated conversations.
B.Sentences and Austen's thinking pattern. C.The old-fashioned vocabulary. D.Not knowing the social background.
2.Which can best replace the underlined word \"indispensable\"? A.Necessary
B.Challenging
C.Relevant
D.Inspirational
3.What advice does the author give in the last paragraph? A.Choose books that challenge us most. B.Read books that are instructive. C.Don't be affected by others' choices. D.Compare books before buying.
4.What is the author's purpose of writing the passage? A.Give comments on literature works. B.Tell beginners how to choose English books. C.Encourage people to read more English books. D.Recommend first class books to English learners.
【答案】 1.B 2.A 3.C 4.B 【分析】
根据第二段中的“It's not the vocabulary that troubled me,but…which seemed too remote to me at that time. ”(困扰我的不是她的词汇,而是奥斯汀的造句方式,以及她的思维方式,在当时我觉得这些都太遥远了。)可知,作者的第一本英文读物《傲慢与偏见》的句子结构和作者简·奥斯汀的思维方式使作者很难读懂这本书。故选B。 2.
词义猜测题。根据第三段“English essays can at once inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell's work. …His simple language enables his philosophy within the reach of ordinary people. ”(英语短文可以立即给你信息,娱乐你,提高你的英语品位。最好的例子就是伯特兰·罗素的作品。它的语言平淡无奇,但你却不禁感受到它的优雅和独特的幽默感。他简单的语言使他的哲学通俗易懂。)可知,画线词前面的部分主要讲的是阅读英语文章的好处,由此可知此处指的应是文章也是必不可少的。故画线词的意思应是“必不可少的,必需的”,与A项necessary的意思相近。故选A。 3.
根据最后一段“Never follow others' recommendations and opinions blindly, however famous or influential (有很大影响的) the person might be. …As a saying goes, one man's meat is another man's poison.”(不要盲目地听从别人的建议和意见,不管这个人有多有名,有多有影响力。
根据第一段“To develop one's taste in English, the most effective way is to read English books extensively. ”(要培养一个人的英语品味,最有效的方法是广泛阅读英语书籍。)以及As a native Spanish, I would like to share some of my experience.”(作为一个土生土长的西班牙人,我想分享一些我的经验。)
题干中常含infer(推断),suggest(暗示),imply(暗示),indicate(暗示),conclude
根据第一段“To develop one's taste in English, the most effective way is to read English books extensively. …As a native Spanish, I would like to share some of my experience.”

Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges.
Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese.Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音调).
One of the study's authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music “actually tunes our sensory system”.This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs, Dr.Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.
Mandarin speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码)of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do.This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role.A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.
For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.
As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word “mi” in three of its meanings: squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds.
The lead author of the study, Patrick C.M.Wong, said it might work both ways.It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments. 1.Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training? A.Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music. B.Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain. C.Because music training might help people with language study. D.Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music.
2.The underlined word “intoned” in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word
“________”. A.created C.seemed
B.spelled D.pronounced
3.What would be the best title for this passage? A.Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter Than English Speakers B.Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language Study C.Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese Learning D.Schools Need to Develop Music Programs
根据第二段第二句中“…researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch”(西北大学的研究人员说,这两种技能都利用了大脑中帮助人们发现音调变化的相同部分)可知,学习这两种技能利用了大脑的相同部分,因此,汉语学习和音乐训练有关系。故选B项。 2.
根据第四段中“This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned. ”(这是因为在普通话和其他亚洲语言中,音调起着核心作用。一个单音节词可以有多种含义,这取决于它是怎样发音的。)可知,在普通话和其他亚洲语言中,音调起着关键作用。对一个单音节词而言,当人们以不同的音调说这个词时,这个词就表达出不同的意思。在第六段中以“mi”为例,这个词不同的音调就代表着不同的意思,所以画线单词表达的应是人们对一个单音节词的“发音”。 故选D项。 3.
主旨大意题。通读全文特别是第二段的“Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese.(现在研究人员发现,受过音乐训练的人更容易学习汉语。)”

If you are planning on travelling, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.
First of all, always check and double-check departure (启程) time. It is amazing how few people
really do this carefully. Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten, my secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought she had said that the plane left at 10:50. When I arrived at the airport, the clerk at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.
The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have some local cash with you when you arrive in a country. Once I arrived at a place at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi and because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead. “Listen! I only take real money!” the driver said angrily. Luckily I was able to borrow a few dollars from a clerk at the hotel, but it was embarrassing.
The third and last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave. I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travel in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.
1.According to the passage, the driver was angry because the writer ________. A.did not give him the local money B.gave him false money C.offered to pay by credit card D.had no enough change
2.Generally, in May the weather in London is ________. A.warm and dry C.hot and wet
3.The writer mainly tells us ________. A.how to plan our trip B.how to enjoy ourselves on trip C.how to make life easier D.how to be well prepared for a trip
B.cold and dry D.cool and rainy
【答案】 1.A 2.D 3.D 【分析】
根据第三段“The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have some local cash with you when you arrive in a country.”(第二条规则是要记住,即使在这个使用信用卡的时代,当你到达一个国家时,携带一些当地现金仍然很重要)和“The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi and because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead. “Listen! It's school time again! You're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad for the vacation is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let's find out more about going back to school.
Most teachers start the school year by introducing themselves and talking about what you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class.
When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Pay close attention so you'll know if you need to raise your hand to ask a question and what the rules are about visiting the restroom.
You might have already known a lot of people in your class on the first day. But it's a great day to make new friends, so try to say “hello” to the kids you know and new ones that you don't. Make the first move and you'll be glad about what you did and so will your new friends!
Most teachers let you pick your own seat on the first day, but by the second or third morning, they'll have mapped out a seating plan. It's a good idea to write down where your seat is in your notebook so you don't forget.
Here are a few final tips for a fantastic (奇异的) first day: Get enough sleep. Have a healthy breakfast. Try your best. Develop good work habits, like writing down your assignments (作业) and handing in your homework on time. Take your time with schoolwork. If you don't understand something, ask the teacher.
1.What can we conclude from the first paragraph? A.All students feel excited about a new term.
B.All teachers let students pick their seats. C.New school worries do not last very long. D.Being hard-working helps make new friends.
2.If students have any questions, it's suggested that they should ________. A.turn to their teachers C.ask their parents
B.write them down D.help with each other
3.What's the author's purpose in writing this passage? A.To offer students some advice on starting a new school term. B.To encourage students to work harder in a new school term. C.To remind children of the importance of starting school. D.To introduce a way to improve students' learning ability.

Drrinnggg! That’s the sound that kids all over the country hate to hear-the alarm bell. The new school year has just started and children across the UK have to wake up early in the morning to go to school.

The number of students who sleep in class drops quickly. Besides, the school has already seen a drop in the number of pupils who play truant(逃学) by 27%. After an earthquake most survivors can be expected to recover over time, particularly with the support of family and friends. Some families will be able to return to their normal life quickly, while others will have to contend with the destruction of their homes, medical problems, and injury to family members. Children especially will need time to recover from the loss of a loved one or a pet or from the closing down of their school.
Children often turn to adults for information, comfort and help. Parents should try to remain calm, answer children’s questions honestly and remain understanding when they see changes in their children’s behavior.
Children react differently to an earthquake depending on their ages, developmental levels and former experiences. Some will respond by withdrawing (不与人交往), while others will have angry outbursts (爆发). Parents should remain sensitive to each child’s reactions. Parents should spend time talking to their children, letting them know that it’s OK to ask questions and to share their worries. Although it may be hard to find time to have these talks, parents can use regular family mealtimes or bedtimes for them. They should answer questions briefly and honestly and be sure to ask their children for their opinions and ideas. Issues may come up more than once and parents should remain patient when you answer the questions again. For young children, parents, after talking about the earthquake, might read a favorite story or have a relaxing family activity to help them calm down. Parents should also tell children they are safe and spend extra time with them. They could play games outside or read together indoors. Most importantly, be sure to tell them you love them.

B.make up
C.put off
D.turn back
2.When children ask the same question again, parents should ________. A.read a favorite story to comfort them B.ask them to help do some housework C.be patient and answer the question again D.take them out to play games
3.Which of the following pieces of advice is NOT mentioned in the passage? A.Keep a close watch on children’s behavior. B.Tell the children they are safe. C.Tell the children you love them. D.Ask educational experts for help. 4.What can we know from the passage?
A.All people will recover from an earthquake quickly.
B.Children may need a longer time to recover after an earthquake. C.Children should turn to their classmates for help after an earthquake. D.Children react in the same way as adults do to an earthquake.

Learning a new language is a long and difficult process. This process can become easier if you set
goals. Goals help guide language learners and give them reasons to continue studying a language. However, if your goals are too difficult, then you will probably become upset.
Many English learners set difficult and even unreasonable goals, such as sounding like a native speaker, or losing their accents. The problem with the goal of sounding like a native speaker is that it is not a reasonable goal for many people.
When English learners begin studying English after a certain age, they are not able to sound exactly like a native English speaker. That is the opinion of Eli Hinkel, a professor at Seattle Pacific University. She says that people who have not reached puberty still have enough muscle and brain plasticity (可塑性) to allow their brain to control their mouth muscles. Puberty is the period of life when a child becomes an adult. After your physical growth has stopped, the brain loses some of its ability to change the way it controls the muscles of the mouth. This is what results in an accent, according to Hinkel. In other words, having an accent is a natural part of the aging process of the brain.
That you might not sound like a native speaker does not mean that you should give up trying to improve your pronunciation. And that you have an accent does not mean that your language skills are poor. Hinkel suggests that English learners should not be too upset about their accents. Another teacher says sounding like a native speaker is not necessary. Marla Yoshida is a teaching English as a foreign language teacher at the University of California, Irvine. She says that improving your pronunciation is surely possible — if you choose a reasonable goal. Marla Yoshida says that when you decide to diet, you are more likely to have success if you set reasonable goals. She suggests working on specific areas of pronunciation that you can improve, instead of trying to sound like a native speaker.
1.What does the underlined part “unreasonable goals” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to? A.Goals that are meaningless. B.Goals that are very small. C.Goals that are based on facts. D.Goals that are impossible to reach.
2.According to Paragraph 3, why are English learners unable to sound like a native speaker? A.They have no native speakers to talk to. B.They don’t have enough time to practice. C.Their brain can’t control their mouth muscles. D.Their mother tongue prevents them from doing so.
3.Which of the following statements would Eli Hinkel probably agree with? A.Having an accent is acceptable.
B.Improving pronunciation isn’t that important. C.Sounding like a native speaker is impossible. D.Poor pronunciation means poor language skills.
【答案】 1.D
2.C 3.A 【分析】

It’s hard to avoid looking like a fool on April Fool’s Day. On April 1 each year, people play tricks on each other. These tricks are usually silly rather than mean. Classmates sometimes tie each other’s shoelaces to their chairs. Teachers might hand out an impossibly difficult surprise test that scares students before they realise it’s only a joke. Newspapers announce fake contests (such as “Win an elephant!”) and report on fake stories (like “UFO” lands in New York City).
Forget gifts, songs and special foods-those are for the other holidays of the year. On April Fool’s Day, the only tradition is to laugh (and maybe to cause a little bit of trouble).
One April Fool’s Day, when I was in high school, a group of students in my class played a very clever and funny trick on the teachers. They bought some chickens and set them free in our school cafeteria. The chickens ran all round the school, in and out of classrooms and under our feet. Feathers were flying everywhere.
Teachers began running after the chickens, trying to catch them. Finally, they caught four of them. But the chickens were wearing numbered tags around their necks, and the teachers discovered that they had only caught chickens NO. 1, 2, 3, and 5. Where was chicken No. 4?
The teachers looked and looked. They couldn’t find another chicken. After a few hours, they realised that the students had played another joke on them: There were only four chickens in the first place! They’d been tricked by the numbers on the chickens.
It’s been a long time since I was in high school, but that April Fool’s Day remains one of my
favourite memories from those years.
1.What can we infer from the first paragraph on April Fool’s Day? A.Everyone is hard to avoid being fooled on April Fool’s Day. B.Students play jokes on teachers on April Fool’s Day. Playing tennis regularly could help keep people off death, but football, rugby and running may not help people to live longer, a study suggests.
A study followed more than 80,000 people for an average of nine years to find out if certain sports protected them against early death. It found that people who played racket sports regularly were the least likely to die over the study period, reducing their individual risk by 47 percent compared with people who did no exercise. Swimmers also reduced their chance of death by 28 percent, aerobics (有氧运动) fans by 27 percent and cyclists by 15 percent. Yet running appeared to have no impact at all on dying early, and neither did playing football or rugby. Scientists say the difference may lie in the social aspect which goes alongside sports like tennis and squash (壁球), which often involve clubs and organized activities outside of the game. It means that people often have larger social net-works and tend to keep up activities into later life, both of which are proven to be good for health.
In contrast, people who play team sports often do not move onto a new sport once their teams break up for family, or injury reasons. They become watchers rather than participants in their chosen activity.
The researchers found that playing racket sports was associated with a 56 percent lower risk from heart death. Similarly, swimmers lowered their heart disease or stroke risk by 41 percent, and people who took part in activities like aerobics, dance or gymnastics lowered their risk by 36 percent. But again running, football and rugby had no significant impact on heart deaths. However, other experts argue that this study must not be misinterpreted as showing that running and football do not protect against heart disease. In this study both runners and footballers had a lower rate of death from heart disease.

Hipster Greenport: 4 places to eat, shop and visit
Greenport may date back to the 1630s, but it’s feeling pretty of-the-moment right now. Here are four places that embody the old-meets-new energy of the village: Claudio’s
If you’ve been to Greenport, you can’t miss Claudio’s — it’s where generations of Long Islanders have made a tradition of eating, whether inside the main restaurant or at the floating dock-bar. The new owners have added fresh elements: Baccano Pizza by Nino, which offers a variety of slices and pies until as late as 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays — is right by the dock entrance. Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market
It’s little spots like this that tell the current Greenport story. There’s no sign or advertising for this tiny house changed from the cabin of an old ship that’s practically hidden down Bootlegger’s Alley near Mitchell Park. But there they are — streams of people who come to enjoy the fresh oysters while drinking local craft beer, with a waterside view. The Times Vintage

An earthquake is one of the most common natural disasters. It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members.
Fragile items like those made of glass are easily broken and should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of placing them in the cupboards higher up. Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. When there is a strong movement, these pieces will fall on the floor directly and not on you.
There is a strong chance of short circuits (短路) and fire during an earthquake. Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens.
During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged. Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you. Never use the elevator to go down. Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out. Use the staircases at all times.
If you are outdoors, do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place. Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object.
If trapped in debris (瓦砾堆), cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. Tap on a pipe or the wall so that rescuers (营救人员) can find you. Use a whistle (哨子) if one is available. Never shout for help. Shouting can cause you to breathe in dangerous amounts of dust. Do not light a match because you may burn yourself. Do not move about or kick up dust. 1.The purpose of the passage is to tell readers . A.what to do in earthquakes B.how to prevent earthquakes C.the damage caused by earthquakes D.the rescue work after earthquakes

Teenagers’fitness is now a major concern, and physical exercise is very important. It reduces stress and improves fitness. Exercise makes your body strong, and helps you to keep the right body weight. Sports scientist Dr. Helen Lopez offers the following advice to teenagers: “First, you need to find out your present level of fitness. Then you can design a programme that will help you become healthier.”
Dr. Lopez suggests that there are three levels of fitness that need a change of lifestyle. “Overweight” means that the person gets very little exercise and often has a serious weight problem. “Inactive” means that the person does not join in many physical activities, but is not seriously overweight. “Active” refers to people who take part in sports and other physical activities, but do not have a high fitness level.
According to Dr. Lopez, overweight teenagers should work out to keep healthy. “Ride a bike, play volleyball or basketball for a while, and go for a twenty-minute walk each day. All these will help to burn calories.” Inactive teenagers should do similar activities, but add some bending and stretching exercises, such as push-ups and sit-ups, starting with twenty of each a day. “Inactive
people can take a little more exercise than overweight people because their bodies are stronger,” Dr. Lopez said. The same rule applies to (适用于) active teenagers.
Dr. Lopez suggests one hour a week or more on running and other forms of intensive exercise, together with fifteen minutes a day spent on stretching and bending activities.
“These are really important in order to prevent injuries,” Dr. Lopez said. Some weight-training and other body-strengthening exercises could also be planned in the programme in order to increase the person’s strength.

B.Physical exercise can help teenagers become healthier. C.Physical exercise can help to burn up calories. D.Physical exercise can increase teenagers’strength. 3.What exercise should people do in order to prevent injuries? A.Walking.
B.Stretching and bending. C.Riding. D.Weight training.
4.What is the best title for the passage? A.Doing Exercise C.Different Lifestyles
B.Teenagers’Fitness D.Overweight Teenagers

因此,考生直接抓住第一段中的“Teenagers' fitness is now a major concern, and physical exercise is very important.”

What is body surfing?
Bodysurfing is related to riding on a wave with no help from aid tools such as a surfboard. That’s why it is called the “purest” form of surfing. In fact, it is one of very few extreme sports—free climbing and cliff diving are. others—that can be practiced using nothing but the human body. How do you do it?
To catch a wave, swim to where the waves break and, as one approaches, start swimming towards the beach. You must try to travel at the same speed as the wave and, if you do it correctly, you will feel the wave lifting you and pushing you forwards. Then try and cut along the surface of the wave. What do you need?
It is more enjoyable and safer if you use flippers (large flat rubber shoes). This is because they enable you to swim faster and surf along them more easily. A wetsuit is also advisable. Another aid is a handboard, a mini-surf board about the size of an iron, held in one hand to speed up along the wave. If you are lucky enough to be surfing in warm water, make sure you have your boardshorts at the ready. Unofficial world championship
Bodysurfing is not a professional sport, but in Hawaii there is such a festival called the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic each year. Local bodysurfers compete against athletes from places such as Australia, Brazil, Japan or France. Famous bodyboarder Mike Stewart has won the event no fewer than 12 times, and Kelly Slater, the greatest surfer in history, has also competed. 1.How does a bodysurfer surf while in the sea?
A.Only using the human body. C.Only following a wave.
2.Which can make you surf faster? A.Flippers and a wetsuit. C.A handboard and boardshorts. A.It is for local bodysurfers. C.All famous bodysurfers favor it.
B.Only relying on a surfboard. D.Only swimming along the beach. B.A wetsuit and a handboard. D.A handboard and Flippers. B.It is held annually in Hawaii. D.Mike Stewart attends it every year.
3.What can we know about the Pipeline Body surfing Classic?
【答案】 1.A 2.D 3.B 【分析】

If you think that running marathons will help you live a long and healthy life, new research may come as a shock. According to a recent scientific study, people who do a very strenuous workout are as likely to die as people who do no exercise at all.
Scientists in Denmark have been studying over 1,000 joggers and non-joggers for 12 years. The death rates from the sample group indicate that people who jog at a moderate pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die. The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as non-joggers. The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries (动脉). Over time, this can cause serious injuries.
Peter Schnohr, a researcher in Copenhagen, said, “If your goal is to decrease the risk of death and improve life expectancy, jogging a few times a week at a moderate pace is a good strategy. Anything more is just unnecessary, and it may be harmful.”
The implications of this are that moderate forms of exercise such as tai chi, yoga and brisk walking may be better for us than “iron man” events, triathlons and long-distance running and cycling. According to Jacob Louis Marott, another researcher involved in the study, “You don’t actually have to do that much to have a good impact on your health. And perhaps you shouldn’t actually do too much.”
1.The underlined word “strenuous” in Paragraph 1 refers to “______”. A.hard C.practical
A.suggest giving up jogging B.show risks of doing sports C.provide supportive evidence D.introduce the research process
3.Why is too much exercise harmful according to the scientists? A.It may injure the heart and arteries. B.It can make the body tired out. C.It will bring much pressure. D.It consumes too much energy.
B.regular D.little
2.The author presents some figures in Paragraph 2 to ______.
【答案】 1.A 2.C 3.A 【分析】
According to a recent scientific study, people who do a very strenuous workout are as likely to die as people who do no exercise at all可知,根据最近的一项科学研究,做非常剧烈运动的人和根本不做运动的人有一样的死亡可能性。 故选A项。 2. 由第二段“Scientists in Denmark have been studying over 1,000 joggers and non-joggers for 12 years. The death rates from the sample group indicate that people who jog at a moderate pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die. The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as non-joggers.”
The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries (动脉). Over time, this can cause serious injuries可知,科学家们认为这是因为剧烈运动会导致心脏和动脉的结构改变。 故选A项。

Why play games? Because they are fun, and a lot more besides. Following the rules, planning your next move and acting as a team member are all “game” ideas that you will come across throughout your life.
Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating .
Many children’s games have a practical side. Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups. For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones, which sharpens the hand-eye coordination (协调) needed in hunting.
Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition. People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.
Sports are also an event that unites people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it — some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future.
Next time you play your favorite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life. 1.What are children expected to learn Through playing hide-and-seek? A.Be a team leader
B.Obey the basic rules
C.Act as a grown-up
A.Games can describe life in an exciting way
D.Predict possible danger
2.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 most probably mean ? B.Games can turn real-life experiences into a play C.Games can make learning life skills more interesting D.Games can change people’s views of sporting events
3.According to the passage, why is winning Olympic medals so encouraging? A.It inspires people’s deep love for the country. B.It proves the exceptional skills of the winners. C.It helps the country out of natural disasters. D.It earns the winners fame and fortune. 4.What’s Iribarne’s goal of forming the foundation ? A.Bringing fun to poor kids. B.Providing soccer balls for children. C.Giving poor kids a chance for a better life. D.Attracting soccer players to help poor kids.
【答案】 1.B 2.C 3.A 4.C 【分析】

划线部分前面的谓语动词是translate有“翻译,解释,转移,调动”的意思,该部分后面有一个定语从句that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating .(教孩子们一些他们将在余生中遵循的基本规则,比如轮流和合作)。
People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it.(观看比赛的人挥
故选A。

例如小题2,划线部分前面的谓语动词是translate有“翻译,解释,转移,调动”的意思,该部分后面有一个定语从句that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and cooperating .(教孩子们一些他们将在余生中遵循的基本规则,比如轮流和合作)。

People in Japan tend to live longer and stay healthier in their later years, with an increasing number of old people living alone. Japan is on a fast track to “ultra-age” with people aged 65 or above accounting for 28 percent of its total population in 2019;it was 26.7 percent in 2017. On the other hand, the number of births in 2019 fell to its lowest (about 941,000) since records began in 1899.
Demand for care services for elderly people has increased. A shrinking (缩小) working population means fewer able-bodied adults are available to look after the elderly. State-provided facilities for the elderly are not enough, which causes elderly people to turn to private ones but they are expensive.
The country will be short of 380,000 of health nurses by 2025. The government has to turn to advanced robots to meet the shortage. A study found that using robots encouraged one third of the people to become more active and independent. Yet there is no robot that can provide the emotional support to the elderly.
Japan provides a case study for China, which is also faced with a fast aging population. 17.23 million babies were born in China in 2019, about 630,000 fewer than in 2018. People aged 60 accounted for 17.3 of China’s population in 2019. With a shortage of elderly care facilities and unbalanced supply, China may find it hard to deal with the rapidly increasing number of senior citizens.
To meet the challenge, the Chinese government should make policy changes, which Japan is unwilling or unable to do or even consider. China should pay attention to the signals its aging population is sending and take proper and timely action. 1.What do we learn about the old Japanese?
A.More and more old Japanese prefer to live on their own.
B.A lot of old Japanese have to continue working at old age. C.Some old Japanese remain active with the help of robots. D.Japanese aged 65 or above make up one third of its population.
2.What can we know about state-provided care facilities for the elderly in Japan? A.They are expensive. C.They are affordable.
A.They hire foreign health nurses. B.They employ advanced robots. C.They set up more nursing schools. D.They train the elderly to tend themselves. 4.What is the main idea of the last two paragraph? A.Japan has to take action to deal with the aging population. B.Robots can’t provide emotional support to the elderly. C.China is now faced with a fast aging population. D.Japan’s aging population issue is a timely lesson for China.
B.They are inconvenient. D.They are fashionable.
3.What do the Japanese do to deal with the shortage of health nurses?

The country will be short of 380,000 of health nurses by 2025. The government has to turn to advanced robots to meet the shortage. Japan provides a case study for China, which is also faced with a fast aging population. To meet the challenge, the Chinese government should make policy changes为了应对挑战,中国政府应该进行政策上的改变,
Japan’s aging population issue is a timely lesson for China.

The World Wildlife Fund for Nature - WWF - reports that nearly 3 billion animals were killed or displaced by Australia’s wildfires in 2019 and 2020. The number, reported in late July, was about three times higher than an earlier WWF estimate. “It ranks as one of the worst wildlife disasters in modern history,” said WWF - Australia Chief Executive officer Dermot O’ Gorman. The WWF said it used different methods to estimate wildlife populations, including information from over 100, 000 studies. The scientists created models to estimate the number of creatures found in areas destroyed by fire. Project leader Lily Van Eeden from the University of Sydney said the research was the first continent - wide examination of animals affected by wildfires. “Other nations can build upon this research to improve understanding of bushfire impacts everywhere,” she said.
Those creatures that fled destroyed habitats faced a lack of food and shelter or the likelihood of moving into already occupied habitats. Researchers said the destruction will cause some species to become extinct before their existence is even recorded. “We don’t even know what we are losing,” said Chris Dickman, a professor of ecology at the University of Sydney. “These were species that were here and now they have gone. . . It’s almost too tragic to think about,” Dickman added.
The WWF report calls for improvements in habitat connectivity to help species escape from fires. It also calls for identifying and protecting habitat that was not burned to help save threatened species. An expanded report on the study is expected later this year.
The wildfires started in September 2019 and continued through March of this year. Scientists say the fires were fueled by higher than normal temperatures and years of drought in the Australian bush. The fires caused 34 human deaths and destroyed nearly 3, 000 homes. The WWF said that over the past year, it had raised money from donors to allocate emergency aid to the front lines of the fires to help injured and displaced wildlife.
1.What do we know about Australia’s wildfires in 2019 and 2020? A.They were the worst disasters in history. B.Over 3 billion animals died in the wildfires. C.They caused more damage than calculated earlier. D.Most animals moved to already occupied habitats.
2.How did Chris Dickman feel about the extinction of some species? A.Astonished.
B.Pained.
C.Annoyed.
D.Puzzled.
3.What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A.The wildfires last a whole year. B.The wildfires were caused by the heat. C.The wildfires also cause damages to humans. D.The wildfires were soon under control with donations. 4.What lesson can we learn from the text?
A.Humans shouldn’t occupy wildlife habitat. B.Humans shouldn’t overestimate the bushfire. C.We should raise money for wildlife protection. D.We should develop the methods to prevent wildfires.
【答案】 1.C 2.B 3.C 4.A 【分析】

I promised Michael I wouldn’t mention this until the season was over. Now l think it's time. Early last season, I wrote a column about an art of kindness I had seen Jordan do to a disabled child outside the stadium. After it ran,I got a call from a marl in the western suburbs. He said,“I read what you wrote about Jordan. but I thought I should tell you another thing I saw. ” Here it comes, I thought. It always does. Write something nice about a person, and people call you up to say that the person is not so nice.
A few weeks later Jordan and I were talking about something else before a game, and I brought up what the man had said. Was the man right? Had Jordan really been talking to those two boys in that poor and dirty neighborhood? \"Not two boys,\" Jordan said. \"But four.\"
And he named them. He said four names. And what did they talk about?
\"Everything,” Jordan said. \" Anything. I’ve asked to see their grades so that I can check to see if they're paying attention to their study. If it turns out that one or two of them may need teaching, I make sure they get it.\"
It's just one more part of Michael Jordan's life one more thing that no one knows about, and one more thing Jordan does fight for. The NBA season is over now, and those boys have their memories. So do J! When the expert reviewers begin to turn against Jordan as they surely will, I'll think about those boys under the streetlight, waiting for the man they know to come. For someone they can depend on.

Finally, I entered the university. Because of my careful savings, I did not have to work during the
school year. Then, summer came and it was time to work harder than ever. I continued working as a waitress at night, instructed tennis camps several mornings a week and worked as a secretary for a few hours in the afternoons. I even decided to take a class at a community(社区) college. This class at the community college saved me $650. It was an extremely tiring summer and made me anxious to return to my relatively easy life at the university.
During my second and third years of undergraduate schooling, I decided to work about five hours per week in the campus admissions office answering phones. This provided a little spending money and kept me from drawing my savings out. I wanted to go to Israel to study for 3 weeks, but I hesitated in making this decision because it would cost me $1,600 more to get the credits(贷款) in Israel. About two weeks later my mom called to tell me that I had $1,600 in the bank that I had forgotten about! One of my concerns about this trip was not only the cost, but the loss of time to make money; however, I made as much that summer in the ten weeks when I was at home as I had made during the fourteen weeks when I was at home the summer before. The way everything worked together to make this trip possible was one of the most exciting things that have ever happened to me.
This experience has shaped me in many important ways. The first thing that I learned was the importance of a strong work ethic(伦理). Working long hours did a lot to develop my character and helped me learn the value of a dollar. It also made me learn how to search for creative ways to settle difficult situations.

Many of us know about Russia’s Take Baikal from our textbook, or by listening to Chinese singer Li Jian’s hit song, Lie Baikal. But over the years, the world’s deepest freshwater lake has been in the spotlight for an extreme sport.
Each March, about 150 people from around the world sign up for the Baikal Ice Marathon. The 26-mile(41, 84 kilometers)journey starts on the lake’s eastern shore. In March, the ice is a meter thick and iron-hard. Runners cross this frozen surface, finishing on the western side of the lake.
It’s believed that Lake Baikal’s beauty is incomparable. Known as the “blue eye of Siberia”, Lake Baikal has particularly clear waters. This means that its ice is almost perfectly transparent(透明的). Seen from above, a runner on the ice looks as if he or she were jogging through space. The scenery might be beautiful, but strong winds blast(侵袭)acorns the lake and forcible can occur within half an hour. Runners say the cold climate is what draws them and that running in such condition is a test of their limits.
“When you are in such an environment, you don’t have cars around and don’t have the noise around. I think these extreme races push you to be alone” Alicia Badalona, a 64-year-old runner from the US said.
The place offers some strange and unique characteristics for this marathon The finishing line is visible(可见的)from the start, but the endless while offers no progress markers. Tourists crowding the ice are mostly addicted to snapping sallies(自拍)and just ignore the runners. For runners, the absence of spectators(观众)makes the race more challenging, because it’s lonely. They must fight with themselves. “You are alone on Baikal. It is your race. You are alone with yourself. All you need to do is to defeat yourself.” Veronique Messina. a French runner, told the Telegraph.
1.What has kept lake Baikal being a focus over the years? A.A famous Chinese singer. C.The Baikal ice marathon.
B.A popular song in Russian. D.The coldness of Lake Baikal.
2.What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 3 refer to? A.The fact that the waters of Lake Baikal are clear. B.The belief that Lake Baikal is known for its waters. C.The reason why Lake Baikal is popular with runners. D.The popularity that clear waters in Lake Baikal enjoy.
3.Why do runners sign up for the Baikal Ice Marathon? A.They prefer to get close to nature. B.They like competition with others. C.They want to draw much attention. D.They intend to test their own limits. 4.Why is Veronique Messina mentioned at last?
A.To prove the power of the runners for the Baikal Ice Marathon. B.To show that runners must fight against themselves in the Marathon. C.To explain that independence is important for marathon runners. D.To indieato the necessity of paying attention co marathon runners.
【答案】 1.C 2.A 3.D 4.B 【分析】

文中第一段最后一句话提出“But over the years, the world’s deepest freshwater lake has been in the spotlight for an extreme sport.” 接着第二段就介绍了这个运动“Each March, about 150 people from around the world sign up for the Baikal Ice Marathon.”
this前面是“Lake Baikal has particularly clear waters.” 故选A项。 3.
由文中“Runners say the cold climate is what draws them and that running in such condition is a test of their limits.”
在最后一段第一句话“For runners, the absence of spectators(观众)makes the race more challenging, because it’s lonely. They must fight with themselves. ”首先提出了,对于参赛者,没有观众,就是一种挑战,因为这是会让参赛者感到是在独自比赛,他们必要挑
战自己,紧接着就又提到了Veronique Messina和他所说的话“You are alone on Baikal. It is your race. You are alone with yourself. All you need to do is to defeat yourself.”
如第2小题,this前面是“Lake Baikal has particularly clear waters.”

But it is expected that Chinese, which is one of the six official languages of the United Nations (UN), will be the most important language in the coming years. What are the reasons behind the rapid spread of this language and why should you learn it?
My desire to learn languages was the reason why I studied many Latin languages and in the process, I deepened my knowledge of the languages and literature. English and Chinese. In London, for example, the Chinese language was introduced for instruction in schools.

As the novel coronavirus epidemic continues, one school after another has organized online classes. The most common form is live streaming, in which all participants, teacher and students alike, sit in front of a computer camera and see each other via the platform.
Many teachers and students simply wear casual clothing for the class, and jokes emerge about each other’s appearance. After all, most of the time it is the teacher appearing on screen, and the students, even if called on by the teacher, will only show their faces.
Yet Shijiazhuang No.1 Middle School in Hebei province recently triggered heated discussion by requiring teachers to wear formal suits and students to wear uniforms while attending online classes.
By Saturday morning, the related topic has become one of the hottest topics on Sina Weibo, with 180 million views.
“The practice can improve students’ sense of formality in the online classes and make them more attentive, said Yao Haibo,” a head teacher of the school in a video clip. “It can also grant students a sense of honor and make them remember their identities as students.”
However, in the comment sections, some micro bloggers claiming to be students disagreed. “Not useful. Whether one works hard or not is not decided by a uniform,” was the most highly voted comment, with 31,000 “likes”.
“Maybe a good move, but unnecessary,” was another highly voted comment.
Whatever the argument is, the problem might be solved in the not — so — distant future. According to official data, the number of newly confirmed diagnosed cases was 397 on Saturday. The students and teachers might, hopefully, see each other in classrooms soon. 1.We can infer from the passage that ________. A.online classes are popular in schools

3.Official online classes in schools may ________ soon because the number of newly confirmed diagnosed cases is dropping. A.continue A.Negative.
