France
The British artist Guy Denning arrived in La Feuille, a small town in the northwest of France,
to stick life-size drawings of soldiers who never came back home. Armed with glue and a brush,
Denning stuck his drawings carefully on walls. Before long 112 men, mainly young adults, were

The Handshake
I don’t remember the exact date I met Marty for the first time. Like a lot of people who want to get through a checkout line, I found my thoughts on speed, nothing more. The line I was standing in wasn’t moving as quickly as I wanted, and I glanced toward the cashier, who was receiving money from customers.
10
He was an old man in his sixties. I thought, well, it probably took him a little longer to get the jobs done. For the next few minutes I watched him. He greeted every customer before he began scanning the goods they were purchasing. Sure, his words were the usual, “How’s it going?” But he did something different—he actually listened to people. Then he would respond to what they had said and talk with them briefly.
I thought it was strange, but I guessed I had grown accustomed to people asking me how I was doing simply out of a conversation without thinking. Usually, after a while, you don’t give any thought to the question and just say something back quietly.
This old cashier seemed sincere about wanting to know how people were feeling. Meanwhile, the high-tech cash register rang up their purchases and he announced what they owed. When customers handed money to him, he pushed the appropriate keys, the cash drawer popped open, and he counted out their change.
Then magic happened.
He placed the change in his left hand, walked around the counter to the customers, and extended his right hand in an act of friendship. As their hands met, the old cashier looked the customers in the eyes. “I want to thank you for shopping here today,” he told them. “You have a great day. Bye-bye.” The looks on the faces of the customers were priceless.
Now it was my turn. I glanced down at the name tag on his red waistcoat, the kind
11
experienced Wal-Mart cashier wore. It read, “Marty.”
Marty told me how much I owed and I handed him some money. The next thing I knew he was standing beside me, offering his right hand and holding my change in his left hand. His kind eyes locked onto mine. Smiling, and with a firm handshake…

A. he spent as much time as possible serving customers
B. he was patient with all the questions from customers
C. he showed particular interest in customers’ personal life
D. he expressed his sincerity while giving back the change
12
27. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Marty was a talkative man.
B. Marty cared a lot about what he did.
C. The author failed to get along well with others.
D. The author was dissatisfied with such a waste of time.

University of Pennsylvania researchers say that for the first time they have linked social media use to increases in depression and loneliness. The idea that social media is anything but social when it comes to mental health has been talked about for years, but not many studies have managed to actually link the two. To do that, Penn researchers, led by psychologist Melissa Hunt, designed a study that focused on WeChat, Snapchat and Instagram.
The study was conducted with 143 participants, who before they began, completed a mood survey and sent along photos of their battery screens, showing how often they were using their phones to access social media. \"We set out to do a much more complete study which attempts to imitate real life.\" Hunt said.
The study divided the participants into two groups: The first group was allowed to maintain their normal social media habits. The other, the control group, was
13
restricted to 10 minutes per day on social media. The restrictions were put in place for three weeks and then the participants returned and were tested for outcomes such as fear of missing out, anxiety, depression and loneliness.
The results showed a very clear link between social media use and increased levels of depression and loneliness. \"Using less social media than you normally do would lead to significant decreases in both depression and loneliness,\" Hunt said.
Social media invites what Hunt calls \"downward social comparison.\" \"When you're online, it can sometimes seem that everyone else is cooler and having more fun and included in more things and you're left out,\" Hunt said. And that's just generally discouraging. \"Every minute you spend online is a minute you are not doing your work or not meeting a friend for dinner or having a deep conversation with your roommate.\" And these real life activities are the ones that can encourage self﹣esteem and self﹣worth, Hunt added.
\"People are on their devices, and that's not going to change,\" she said. But as in life, a bit of control goes a long way.
28. Before the study was conducted, the participants completed a survey to .
A. imitate people's real life
B. link loneliness to depression
14
C. show their use of social media
D. prove social media is important
29. The results of the study showed using less social media would result in .
A. people's fear of missing out
B. higher levels of depression
C. obvious relief in loneliness
D. lower levels of happiness
30. In Hunt's opinion, which activity benefits more to mental health?
A. Hiking out with friends.
B. Making comparison with others.
C. Playing computer games in spare time.
D. Logging onto social media and having fun.
31. Which can be the best title of the passage?
15
A. A Study on Social Media.
B. How to Improve Mental Health.
C. People Addicted to Social Media.
D. Social Media Influences Mental Health.
D
\"Big tobacco\" is what the bosses of several large technology firms have started calling Facebook. Being compared to the tobacco giants is far from praise, but it is not the only wide﹣spread analogy(比拟). A lower blow is the suggestion that Facebook may become like Yahoo, the once high﹣flying internet firm that fell.
Even a year ago the idea would have been unthinkable. But since January Facebook has become trapped in a series of misjudgments and missteps. It became clear that it had done too little to stop Russian interference(干涉) in America's election in 2016. It had to admit that it had shared the personal data of 90m users with outside firms without permission.
The comparison to Yahoo is imperfect. Even at its peak Yahoo's business was never as large and profitable as Facebook's. One of the main reasons Yahoo declined is because it lost out to a powerful competitor, Google, in online search; Marissa Mayer, its boss from 2012 until its sale to Verizon last year, was unable to restore
16
advertisers' or employees' confidence as users left.
But people who watched Yahoo's falling see similarities. Executive(主管) turnover was a leading indicator of its decline; before Ms. Mayer was hired Yahoo went through four chief executives in three years. Mr. Zuckerberg, who controls the majority of Facebook's voting shares, is not leaving, but many top executives are. This year several have announced their departures, including Facebook's chief security officer.
When advertisers' faith in Facebook has been shaken, politicians in Washington are running out of patience with the company. Lawmakers' inspection of the firm is causing it to be more cautious about how it uses data for targeting advertisements and about what information it makes available to outsiders.
Mr. Zuckerberg and Ms. Sandberg are under pressure to prove to employees and advertisers that Facebook is not only trustworthy but worthy of their time and money. If they cannot do so, and the company's share price continues its slide, it is possible that Ms. Sandberg will be replaced in the next year. Mr. Zuckerberg will doubtless have thoughts about Yahoo's sorry tale.
32. For Facebook, being compared to \"big tobacco\" is .
A. positive B. ambitious C. creative D. negative
33. According to the author, what does Facebook currently have in common with the failed Yahoo?
17
A. Letting out users' data.
B. Being deep in financial crisis.
C. Leaders are leaving the company.
D. Laying off a large number of employees.
34. The author tries to support his judgment about Facebook by .
A. questioning its management
B. using evidence related to it
C. analyzing its financial data
D. listing its advantages and disadvantages
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Facebook gets trapped in trouble.
B. Two companies are deep in crisis.
C. How to save Facebook.
18
D. Faith is more valuable than gold.

A new study suggests that the timing of a wound affects the speed at which it heals(痊愈). Wounds suffered during the day heal around 60 percent faster than those at night.
The study showed how the bodies circadian rhythm(昼夜节律) controlled the healing of wounds. 36 It tells our bodies when to wake up, eat and sleep in a circle—a series of activities that repeat themselves day after day. 37 In the study, researchers found that skin cells moved faster to repair wounds suffered during the day. Their findings were published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
The researchers examined cells, mice, and burn injury databases. 38
Night-time burns—burns suffered between 8 o’clock at night and 8 o’clock the next morning—were 95 percent healed after an average of 28 days.
But after an average of 17 days, daytime burns -burns suffered between 8 o’clock in the morning and 8 at night -were 95 percent healed. 39
19
Wounds are very costly to treat. 40 In Britain’s National Health Services, for example, such services cost around $6.56 billion per year. Experts say the high costs result, in part, from a lack of drugs that speed up the closure of wounds.
A. Each cycle lasts about 24 hours.
B. The circadian rhythm is like a clock or timer.
C. Specifically, their investigation found the following information:
D. The new study's findings could help scientists develop better drugs.
E. In other words, nighttime injuries took an average of 11days longer to heal.
F. Worldwide, billions of dollars are spent every year on wound-treatment services.
G . That's what a group of researchers from a university in Canada recently published.

One Possible Version
This Spring Festival, I went to Australia for a trip with my beloved grandma. We appreciated the beauty of Sydney and witnessed Chinese elements everywhere.
The instant we stepped into the hotel lobby to check in, we were surprised to find it
27
decorated with red Chinese lanterns. And we were greeted with “Happy Chinese New Year”.
Our first destination was the world-famous Sydney Opera House, in front of which stood a giant lantern of zodiac dog, reminding visitors of the Chinese New Year. Delighted and excited, Grandma had a photo taken with it. Afterwards, we headed for the University of Sydney. When we were touring the amazing campus, a Chinese calligraphy exhibition caught our sight. How amazing it was to see “Fu” so far away from home!
Surprised at the festive atmosphere, I shared some pictures on WeChat with the words “Chinese Style Everywhere”. Immediately, I got 60 Likes! We were proud of the increasing influence of China.

W: Well, what did you think of that film?
M: I had mixed feelings really. From what I’d read, I expected it to be funnier.
W: I know what you mean — just shows how different people’s tastes can be.
Good twist at the end though. I wasn’t expecting that, were you?
M: I kind of guessed what was coming, to be honest. There were a lot of
references to other films in the storyline I thought.
W: Oh, you think so? I wasn’t quite sure what message it was trying to convey,
though. One minute it seemed to be saying one thing and the next it was saying the opposite.
M: Yeah, I agree.

M: It sounds like a lot, but by the time you add up the air fare, meals and hotels,
it’s pretty reasonable.
W: But I doubt we’ll all be able to go. Remember there were 32 people in the
band last year.
M: We can make it. For our last trip, we got some money from some companies.
W: Who was in charge of money raising? M: Mary. She took care of it last time.
听下面一段对话,回答第10至第12三个小题。现在,你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。

M: Hi, Tracy. I went into the college today to find out about evening classes.
W:
I still remember the painting course had so many people in it that you

couldn’t really get any personal help.
M: Yes, but they have decided to limit the number this year, so if you want to do it
you have to book a place.Anyway I wonder whether I ought to do computing really.
W: But would it be advanced enough for you?
M: I think so. The woman who runs it is supposed to be very good. She’s not just
a programmer. She’s a well-trained teacher as well.
W: It’s up to you of course. But at the end of a day’s work, I just want
something relaxing. And I’d have to pay for materials. I can’t afford more than the minimum.
M: Then why don’t you try Spanish? And it’d be really useful on holiday.

W: On today’s show we have Dennis Dean, owner of Double the Fun bus parties.
Hi, Dennis. Can you tell us what you do?
33
M: Well, Double the Fun is a party bus where you and up to 50 friends can hold
celebrations. All buses have fridges for cold drinks, disco-quality sound, an amazing light show and comfortable leather seats. What we don’t have is cooking equipment. All buses also have a bus host, whose job is to make sure all the guests get back on the bus after each stop.
W: the bus?
After each stop? So guests don’t spend the whole evening driving around on
M: No! In fact, we take them to 4 different clubs during the evening. At each club,
we’ve booked special VIP entrance, which means no waiting to get in, and everyone gets a free drink.
W: Anything else our listeners should know about the parties?
M: Yes, all guests must be smartly dressed. No jeans or sports shoes. The only
exception would be if they want to have a fancy-dress party. And we need to know the time you book if you are planning a fancy-dress party. Clubs like to know in advance when parties will be arriving.
W: Thanks, Dennis.
