五、阅读理解(5题)
34.Passage 2
Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities. Of course, there have always been people who have looked for adventure—those who have climbed the highest mountains, explored unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans. Now, however, there are people who seek an immediate thrill from a risky activity which may only last a few minutes or even seconds.
I would consider bungee jumping to be a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place (perhaps a bridge, or a hot-air balloon) 200 metres above the ground with an elastic rope tied to your ankles. You fall at up to 150 kilometres an hour till the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is estimated that 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping. Other activities as risky as bungee jumping involve jumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of high cliffs. Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and boring. Not very long ago, people's lives were constantly under threat. They had to go out and hunt for food, diseases could not easily be cured, and life was a continuous battle for survival.
Nowadays, according to many people, life offers little excitement. They live and work in a comparatively safe environment; they buy food in shops, and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. The answer for some of these people is to seek danger in activities such as bungee jumping
What's the best title for the passage() A.Dangerous Sports: What and Why B.The Boredom of Modern Life
C.Bungee Jumping: Is It Really Dangerous D.The Need for Excitement

B.Those living in the countryside C.Those who are very poor
D.Those who are in need of help
37.A picture remains on the retina for ______()
A.6 seconds B.1 second C.16 seconds D.1/6 of a second
38.In Britain and other countries, young people sometimes take a gap year, a year off between high school and college. This idea never gained a big following in the United States. Recent news reports have suggested that interest may be growing, though there are no official numbers.
Charles Deacon is the dean of admissions at Georgetown University in Washington D.C.. He estimates that in the current first-year class of 1600 students, only about twenty-five decided to take a year off. He says this number has not changed much over the years.
Mr. Deacon says the most common reason is to have a chance to travel. But he says international students may take a gap year to meet requirements at home for military duty.
Some high school graduates see a year off as a chance to recover after twelve years of required education. Butit can also give students a chance to explore their interests. Students who think they want to be doctors, for example, could learn about the profession by volunteering in a hospital for a year.
Many colleges and universities support gap-year projects by permitting students to delay their admission. Experts say students can grow emotionally and intellectually as they work at something they enjoy. The Harvard admissions office has an essay on its website called Time Out or Burn Out for the Next Generation. It praises the idea of taking time off to step back, think and enjoy gaining life experiences outside the pressure of studies. It also notes that students are sometimes admitted to Harvard or other colleges in part because they did something unusual with that time.
Of course, a gap year is not for everyone. Students might miss their friends who go on directly to college. and parents might worry that their children will decide not to go to college once they take time off. Another concern is money. A year off, away from home, can be costly
The word it in Paragraph 4 refers to _________() A.required education B.university study C.a year off D.military duty

39.见解析Part-time Jobs In contemporary society, college students' taking part-time jobs has become a hot topic. It has a great influence on their life. I believe there are both benefits and drawbacks. Clearly, in addition to getting an income, college students taking part-time jobs may enjoy a more exciting lifestyle. as they can meet people from all walks of life and develop a sense of responsibility which can't be learned in the classroom. On the other hand, the negative effects of part-time jobs are also obvious. Students who take part-time jobs may spend less time focusing on study, and if they seek to excel in both the part-time jobs and study, the busy life they lead may put their health at risk. Besides, the society is much more complicated than they have expected, and they sometimes may be exposed to danger. In my opinion, college students ought to keep a balance between academic study and part-time jobs, and always bear in mind that a student's priority is to acquire knowledge at school.
